Comparing the SAS GLM and MIXED Procedures for Repeated Measures
نویسنده
چکیده
Repeated measures analyses in the SAS GLM procedure involve the traditional univariate and multivariate approaches. The SAS MIXED procedure employs a more general covariance structure approach. This paper compares the two procedures and helps you understand their methodologies. A numerical example illustrates many of the key similarities and differences.

Mixed Model Analysis of Data : Transition from GLM to MIXED
The GLM procedure has been the workhorse for mixed model applications in the SAS® System. Other procedures, including NESTED and VARCOMP, are used for specific applications. Since its introduction in 1976, GLM has been enhanced with several mixed model facilities such as the RANDOM and REPEATED statements. However, there are aspects of certain models that none of these facilities fully accommod...

Mixed linear models were developed by animal breeders to evaluate genetic potential of bulls. Application of mixed models has recently spread to all areas of research, spurred by availability of advanced computer software. Previously, mixed model analyses were implemented by adapting fixed-effect methods to models with random effects. This imposed limitations on applicability because the covari...
متن کاملThe Evolution of Linear Models in SAS: A Personal Perspective
Phenomenal growth in computational power from 1970 through 2010 enabled a parallel expansion in linear model methodology. From humble beginnings in agriculture, linear model applications are now essential in sciences of genetics, education, and biostatistics, to name a few. Indeed, the meaning of "linear models" has evolved accordingly. Developers at SAS Institute have been in the forefront of ...
متن کاملComparison of Features and Applications of four Linear Models Procedures
Development of SAS ® linear models procedures over the past several years has led to a number of easily accessible methodological statistical advances for experimental data analysis. The original linear models program, GLM, was a fixed model procedure for analysis of normally distributed data with homogeneous variances. The GENMOD procedure extended the fixed linear model analysis to a number o...
متن کاملAnalysis of Longitudinal Data: Comparison between PROC GLM and PROC MIXED
Longitudinal data refers to datasets with multiple measurements of a response variable on the same experimental unit made over a period of time. These types of data require special attention because they involve correlated data. The relationships between repeated measurements are important in assessing reliability and tracking of those measurements. The proper variancecovariance structure in th...
